Carol Channing and Tovah Feldshuh: Differing Views on Dolly

In a double interview, Jesse Green of The New York Times spoke to the first and latest actresses to portray the titular character of Hello Dolly!, the production adapted from Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker.

“Last month, a day before rehearsals for the Paper Mill production began, Ms. Feldshuh welcomed Ms. Channing, 85, to her Central Park West apartment to talk Dolly. Ms. Channing, who is touring in a solo show called “The First Eighty Years Are the Hardest” but devotes most of her time to her educational foundation, was dressed in an all-black ensemble and owl glasses. Ms. Feldshuh wore a pink camisole and a diaphanous flowered skirt. The contrast in styles continued as they discussed their approaches to the role. Excerpts from the conversation follow.”
